Maria Leal da Costa trained at Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa (Superior Fine Arts School of Lisbon) and worked for several stone factories ateliers; she continued developing her investigation in a very personal way, following a real spirit of experimentation and exploitation of the plasticity of stone, bronze and iron. In what concerns painting she applies basically the same principles which characterise her sculpture works.
She applies an accurate concentration to recurrent approaches to the subjects which are particularly significant for her, like the greatness of soul and travelling.
The language explored in her works is related with the expressivity of the materials which are shaped in such a way that transmit to the final result an idea of lightness, mystery and poetry.
Her style is characterized by a big simplicity together with an obstinate rigour, allowing the spirit of dream to come up from the earth.
The passion of shaping the stone is mainly due to her empathy with this raw material, perceiving inside it the objects which are at the same time in her imagination.
Thus an alliance is created, involving the respect to the raw material identity and the artist will of communication..
